An original "Lucania" armchair frame in pressed steel by Giancarlo de Carlo for Arflex, Italy. The chair is available with or without upholstery, please contact us for details.
The chair was featured in Domus magazine in 1957/58 which set out the details of the design and the techniques used in its construction. The Domus articles, which include original advertising images from Arflex, provide images of both the internal and external structure which shows how rubber straps were stretched across the hooks in the frame to provide support and comfort (see image 4). The seat has a separate frame which is bolted to the main body and allows the seat to be upholstered separately. As can be seen from the images the back and arms form a single shell, giving the design an organic appearance. The leg section is designed to cradle the body, and remains visible when the chair is upholstered; the black finish remains in good condition, with some signs of age as one might expect. All six fixing bolts are in place.
